About Ashford - show infohide info

Ashford is both a town and a district borough in the county of Kent. The borough of Ashford was formed in the 70's by the merging of Ashford and Tenterden Urban Districts with the Rural Districts of East Ashford, West Ashford and Tenterden. Ashford borough now includes 18 wards. Ashford town's origins are thought to lie in the ninth century when the country was invaded by the Danes in 893. At the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, Ashford's entry records one Church and two mills. By the 17th century, Ashford had become established as a significant market town, with an ideal location in relation to Canterbury, Hythe, Romney Marsh and the Weald, as well as the port of Faversham. In modern times, Ashford has undergone rapid change from agriculture to an emphasis on industry and commerce. Ashford's location in regard to the M20 motorway corridor and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and its International Station have led to farming land being used in more relevant ways.
