Coleraine is a town in the Northern Ireland, in County Londonderry. As of 2001, the town had a population of 24,089. It is home to the Mountsandel mound, where wooden houses dating to 7000BC have been found, thus Coleraine is arguably one of the oldest settlements in Northern Ireland. However, through history, Coleraine has been fairly unremarkable. Coleraine is headquarters of Coleraine Borough Council. The Borough Council area together with the neighbouring district of Limavady, forms the East Londonderry constituency for elections to the Westminster Parliament and Northern Ireland Assembly. The town is popular with tourists thanks to the Mountsandel mound, as well as sites such as the Giants Causeway nearby. The town has a museum, marina, theatre and a leisure centre. Outdoor sports are available nearby, including walking, golf, fishing and watersports such as sufing from nearby beaches. Boat trips operate from Portrush and Portstewart. Water skiing is available from the marina in Coleraine. Coleraine also hosts an annual airshow in early September, the highight being the Red Arrows. Coleraine is served by rail on the line between Coleraine and Portrush, wih trains shuttling between the two locations approximately every 40 minutes; some trains are through trains from Belfast Great Victoria Street. Trains between Belfast and Londonderry also run through Coleraine, connecting with the Portrush shuttle services. The services between Belfast and Londonderry operate between 90 minutes and 2 hours. Nearby towns to Coleraine include Portrush, Portstewart, Ballymoney, Castlerock, Downhill, Limavady and Ballycastle.
