About Swansea - show infohide info

Swansea is a city and county in south Wales, situated on the coast, immediately to the east of the Gower peninsula in the traditional county of Glamorgan. Swansea city boundaries are widely drawn and include a large amount of open countryside, and towns like Gorseinon and Loughor, along with the Gower peninsula. Swansea is Wales's second city, and it grew to its present importance during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, becoming a centre of heavy industry. Swansea is an industrial port on Swansea Bay, an inlet of the Bristol Channel. In addition to being a holiday resort, Swansea is also a commercial centre, and the recently regenerated dock areas are home to some cutting-edge hi-tech industries. The University of Wales has a large campus as well as an Associate College of Higher Education in the city.
