Trowbridge is a town in the county of Wiltshire. According to the 2001 census, Trowbridge has a population of 28,141 poeple. Trowbridge lies on the River Biss. The name of the town is thought to come from a root meaning 'Tree Bridge', referring to the first bridge over the River Biss. Trowbridge was originally dominated by the wool trade. The last mill closed in 1982, and is now a museum dedicated to the industry and its history in Trowbridge. The Kennet and Avon Canal runs through the town, and was instrumental in the growth of the wool industry in the town. Trowbridge has a number of architectural interest buildings from its wool related past, as well as the Newtown conservation area, an area of preserved Victorian-era houses. Trowbridge has been known for its easy going and chilled out life style. However, in 2000, a district councillor took this a little far when he famously comapred Trowbridge to Ibiza, despite the fact he had never been to Ibiza. His views also caused many residents to suspect he had never been to Trowbridge, either! Trowbridge sees a number of local trains calling at its station. Services are operated by Wessex Trains, and operate to Bristol, Westbury, Weymouth, Cardiff Central, Portsmouth Harbour, Southampton Central, Worcester Shrub Hill, Filton Abbey Wood, Swindon and Frome, though trhe majority of these services are hourly at best. Nearby towns to Trowbridge include Bath, Bristol, Westbury, Frome, Melksham, Midsomer Norton, Radstock, Bristol, Chippenham, Warminster, Bristol, Shepton Mallet and Devizes.
