Aberdeen is a city of north-east Scotland on the North Sea at the mouth of the Dee River. Due to the stone from local quarries used in many of the buildings, Aberdeen is known as 'the Granite City'. Aberdeen boasts bustling shopping malls, a wide variety of entertainment and leisure amenities including golf courses and bowling greens. Aberdeen is also a university town and research centre as well as a major seaport. Aberdeen's modern economy is fuelled by the oil industry, earning the city its epithet as 'Oil Capital of Europe'. However, traditional industries such as fishing and farming still flourish in and around the city. The north-east of Scotland features beautiful coastlines, towering peaks, historic castles and rolling countryside. The Grampian Highlands has an impressive tally of 60 castles with Balmoral Castle being the most famous.
