About St Peter Port - show infohide info
St Peter Port is the capital of Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands. It is the larges port on the island also. Traditionally, it is known as St Pierre Port due to the historical French association with the islands. The population of St Peter Port is just over 17,000. The town is located on the Eastern side of the island, and has a natural port around which the town was built. The island of Guernsey was originally the tip of a peninsula, jutting out into the English Channel, though rising sea levels soon cut Guernsey off from France. The land was first inhabited by neolithic farmers. Later, the Lenur Islands (former name of the Channel Islands) were occupied by the Britons. In 933, the islands were annexed by the Duchy of Normandy. The island of Guernsey and the other Channel Islands represent the last remnants of the medieval Duchy of Normandy. In the islands, Elizabeth II's traditional title as head of state is Duke of Normandy. During WWII, Guernsey was occupied by the Germans, and so many children were evacuated to live with relatives on the mainland of England. During the German Occupation, many residents of the island were sent to German labour camps in the south of Germany. Today, notable features of the town include the harbour of St Peter Port (which is regularly visted by cruise ships including the famous QE2), the Royal Courthouse, Hauteville house, the Town Church and Castle Cornet. The port is popular for tourists to the island, partly for the beauty of the island, and partly for the tax free goods available from all the shops in the town! Guernsey Airport serves St Peter Port and the island. The airport has recently opened a new terminal (in 2004) which has won architectural awards, and many positive comments from travellers. The airport is very busy, with over 800,000 users expected to pass through over 2006. Airlines using the airport include Aurigny (to Alderney, Bristol, Dinard, Jersey, London Gatwick, London Stansted, Manchester), FlyBE (to Birmingham, Exeter, London Gatwick, Southampton), Rockhopper (Alderney, Bournemouth, Jersey, St Brieuc), VLM (Rotterdam). Seasonal services are operated by Eurowings (Dusseldorf) and Lufthansa (Stuttgart).
