About Bude - show infohide info

Bude is a small holiday resort town in Cornwall. It rests on the north coast at the mouth of the River Neet. Bude has developed from the much older market town of Stratton. Bude’s noteworthy buildings and landmarks include the parish church of St Michael and All Angels, Ebbingford Manor, and the town's oldest house, Quay cottage in the centre of town. As a coastal town, Bude’s main industry is tourism, although some fishing does take place. The area is renowned for its coastal scenery and geology. The cliffs, with their folded banded strata, have been broken into fantastic forms by the waves. Many ships including the Bencoolen have been destroyed here. The Bencoolen, lost in 1862, has its figurehead preserved in the churchyard. In the 19th century, Bude was notorious for its wreckers. They caused many deliberate deaths for plunder; more than 80 between 1824 and 1874. Bude used to be on the London & South-Western railway line until the Beeching Axe of the early 60s. When it was running, it contributed to the development of Bude as a resort during the Victorian era. Bude’s most impressive houses from this time were built as holiday homes for the wealthy classes. There is a small tidal haven protected by a breakwater that most people refer to as Bude Harbour. It is mainly sport fishermen that decorate this area, but this is accompanied by a few smaller scale, semi-commercial fishing for crab and lobster. Bude’s proper harbour is wharf on the canal and is accessed by the sea lock that links the canal to the haven. This part of the harbour is only opened around high tide and when sea conditions are permissible. Then Bude canal was initially constructed to take tub boats of the mineral packed sand from Bude’s beaches for use on the fields inland. In 2005 a major refurbishment project was approved to redevelop the canal. Tourists visit Bude to suit a variety of demands. Bude holds several festivals and has many water and land activities, and is also a place for quiet relaxation in pleasant scenery.
