About Alloa - show infohide info
Alloa is a small burgh in Clackmannanshire, Scotland. It rests on the River Forth and is 6 miles from Stirling. Alloa’s most well known landmark is the Alloa Tower. It is the only surviving part of the ancestral medieval residence of the Erskine family, the Earls of Mar after the rest was destroyed by fire. The Alloa Tower dates from the 14th century and as such is the largest surviving keep in Scotland. The Tower has had many notable guests. According to legend, Mary, Queen of Scots was reconciled with Darnley here. It is also said that Mary’s son, who was to be James VI, dies at birth here at was replaced by the Earl of Mar’s baby son. The Alloa Tower itself has been altered and sustained over time, but the medieval dungeon and magnificent oak roof beams remain, as well as a sweeping Italian-style staircase that was an addition in the 18th century. Portraits and silver on loan from the present Earl of Mar and Kellie can also be viewed. During the 18th century, Alloa was a thriving river port that exported Glasgow’s goods to Europe. The town also contained at least nine significant breweries, although these fell into decline at the end of the1990s. Alloa also suffered the closure of the railway station, although the Stirling-Alloa-Kincardine rail link should reopen in 2007.
