About Aylesbury - show infohide info
Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire is part of London's commuter belt, and is located in the south central of England. The town name of Aylesbury is originally Anglo-Saxon, although there was a settlement as early as 1500 BC. In the time of the Anglo-Saxons Aylesbury was a major market town, and is also the resting place of Saint Osyth. The Early English parish church of St. Mary is built over remains of the Saxon crypt. Aylesbury today has little to show of its ancient past Aylesbury was made the county town of Buckinghamshire in 1529 by King Henry VIII. Aylesbury Manor was among the many properties belonging to Thomas Boleyn, the father of the infamous Anne Boleyn. In recent times, Aylesbury has become a highly developed and busy town helped by new homes built in the 1960's, which is set to grow again with large developments planned. Having always been a thriving market centre, Aylesbury is still a major commercial town with the market meeting four days a week. With three industrial centres, Aylesbury has one of the country's lowest unemployment rates.
