Hereford is a city in the West of England, close to the border with Wales. It is county town of the county of Herefordshire. The city has a population of 50,154 according to the 2001 census. Hereford was founded in about 700AD, and became the Saxon capital of West Mercia. The present cathedral dates from the 12th century. during the English Civil War, Hereford changed hands several times; originally being occupied by the Parliamentarians in September 1642 before they withdrew to Gloucester in December when Hereford was briefly occupied by the Royalists. It was re-occupied by the Parliamentarians, but it was in 1645 that the town was finally taken by the Parliamentarians. Today Hereford is a bustling Cathedral City, with a large amount of people employed in the service sector. Additional employers include Sun Valley Foods, Bulmers Ciders and several metal alloy manufacturers. Hereford is also the traditional home of the famous SAS, and remains so today. Hereford has a rail service, with trains to locations inluding Birmingham, Dorridge, Manchester, Cardiff, Holyhead and Carmarthen. Nearby towns towns include Worcester, Great Malvern, Leominster, Hay-on-Wye, Gloucester and Abergavenny.
