Uckfield is a town in the county of East Sussex, 43 miles from London. The town has a population of 13,350 as of 2001. The town has grown mainly as a commuter town for London. It is known for being the final place Lord Lucan was seen, at the home of his friends Ian and Susan Maxwell-Scott in 1974. The town's Picture House cinema was built in 1916, and is allegedly the only cinema for 20 miles. The town is twinned with Quickborn, a town in Germany. The town has a number of leisure activities, incuding a leisure centre, golf course and park. A number of cafes and restaurants can be found in the town. It's high street is home to some large national shopping chains as well as independant small retailers. Uckfield is connected to the capital, London, via rail. The services run via East Croydon. Uckfield is the terminating station, though in the past services used to continue to Lewes and Brighton, however the line was closed along with a line which allowed services to Royal Tunbridge Wells. Currently, trains operate hourly to Oxted and London Bridge, though there are more frequent services to London during peak travel times.
