About Mallorca - show infohide info
Mallorca (or Majorca) is one one of the Balearic Islands, located to the east of mainland Spain, in the Mediterranean Sea. It is the largest of the Balearic Islands, and its capital is Palma de Mallorca; which is capital of the autonomic community of the Baleric Islands. Mallorca has been inhabited for several millenia, and has seen several ruling orders over time, including the Vandals and the Byzantine Empire. In 1344, King Pedro IV of Aragon invaded, and in 1479, Aragon and Castille united to form the Kingdom of Spain, a part of which Mallorca has remained since. Since the 1960's, the main industry of the island has been tourism, and is particularly popular with British and German tourists. The airport annually handles over 20 million passengers, the majority of these during the summer holiday season. Main resorts are Alcudia and Pollenca on the north coast, Port de Manacor and Capdecara on the east coast, S'Arenal and Magaluf on the south coast, and Soller on the west coast. Other important towns are Inca, Sa Pobla, Muro, Santa Maria, Sineu, Llucmajor, Manacor, Campos and Valledemosa. Mallorca attracts tourists for several reasons. Magaluf is popular for budget holidays with raucous nightlife. Pollenca and Alcudia are for relaxing beachside holidays. The island has a scenic mountainous region along the north west coast, and in there are a number of monasteries and churches of varying ages. The island attracts people of all ages and interests; it has something for everyone.
