Leicester is a borough of central England east-northeast of Birmingham on the River Soar. Built on the site of a Roman settlement, Leicester is an important industrial centre in a mining and sheep-raising district. Leicester is the traditional county town of Leicestershire. Leicester lies on the edge of the National Forest. The city centre is mainly Victorian with some later developments, which have usually been integrated in smoothly.
