About Elgin - show infohide info
Elgin is a Royal Burgh in north-east Scotland, 35 miles east of Inverness and 70 miles west of Aberdeen. The main industry in the area is whisky thanks to the vast number of distilleries in the Speyside area. These include such well known names as Johnnie Walker, the largest selling whisky in the world. The town is the administrative centre for the Moray council area and is also the traditional county town of the traditional county of Elginshire. There are claims that Elgin was granted city status in the 13th century due to the presence of the cathedral, but it is not officially recognised as a city today, and the Scottish Executive do not include it as one of the six cities of Scotland. Locally, the towns of Inverness, Lossiemouth, Kellas, Longmorn and Dipple are nearby.
