Montrose is a small port and tourist resort on the east coast of Scotland. Accoridng to the 2001 census, its population is 10,845. Montrose was originally thought to be a Norse settlement in the area of the current harbour, however its first documented evidence is the Burgh charter issued by David I ion the 12th century. At one time it traded with Hanseatic League, a network of trading towns in the north of Europe. Montrose was also a major smuggling centre in the 18th century. West of Montrose lies the Montrose Basin, the largest inland saltwater basin in the UK. The town is served by rail, with regular trains to Aberdeen, Perth, Edinburgh and Glasgow as well as some direct trains to London from Aberdeen.
