Loughborough is a town of 55,492 inhabitants, situated in the county of Leicestershire. The town is known for it's excellent university, and the number of athletes it has produced, including Paula Radcliffe and Sebastian Coe. Loughborough is also the site of the world's largest bell foundry. Loughborough is also famous for being the worlds first package holiday destination, organised by Thomas Cook for a temperance group from nearby Leicester. The University in Loughborough is situated on its own grounds on the outskirts of the town. It has a population of approximately 13,000 students; thus a number of services in the town exist to serve the university and its students, with several supermarkets and plenty of nightlife in the town. The town has a pedestrianised shopping centre with a twice-weekly open air market, and a number of big name shops and stores. There is also a large indoor shoping centre on the site of Loughborough's old bus station. Large employers in the town include Loughborough University, 3M Healthcare, AstraZeneca and the Brush Traction railway works, which was once the largest employer in the town. The town is well linked to the rest of the UK. The M1 motorway is just to the west of the town, and the Luton-Carlise A6 passes through the centre of the town. The A50 is also close by, with links to the M6 for Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham. Nottingham East Midlands airport is just 10 miles away, with flights across Europe. Loughborough also has rail links to London, Sheffield and Nottingham via the Midland Main Line. The town was formerly part of the Great Central Railway, however this was closed during the 1960s. Today, Loughborough is the base for a short section of preserved line, still known as the Great Central Railway. The line is 8½ miles long, and runs to the outskirts of Leicester. Towns close to Loughborough include Leicester, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Coalville, Mountsorrel, Shepshed, Beeston, Derby and Burton-upon-Trent.
