About Stirling - show infohide info
Stirling is a city in Stirlingshire, Scotland. The city has a population of over 45,000. Historically, Stirling has been strategically important since the Roman occupation of Britian, due to its easily defensible hill and commanding position next to the river Forth. The castle remained important up until the 18th century; since the requirement for easily defendable castles has ceased. Later, a port was founded in Stirling, at Riverside. This was an economically important port, and it received many imported goods, including tea from India and timber from the Baltics. With the coming of the railways, the port at Stirling decined, not least as the railway required a bridge which restricted access to the port at Riverside. The port closed for good in the mid-20th century. Stirling is famous for being the first location of powered flight in Scotland, in an aircraft built in the city by the Barnwell brothers, who worked for Grampian Motors in Causewayhead. One of the brothers, Frank, went on to design aircraft including the Bristol Blenheim. Stirling is still connected by rail, and sees services between Dunblane and Edinburgh or Glasgow Queen Street, as well as some less frequent services from Glasgow Queen Street to Aberdeen. All services are operated by First ScotRail. Nearby towns to Stirling include Falkirk, Bannockburn, Grangemouth, Kincardine, Stenhousemuir, Larbert, Denny, Clackmannan and Alloa.
