The town lies on the River Thurso, which flows through the town and into Thurso Bay. The history of Thurso is said to date to the era of Norse Orcadian rule in Caithness, which ended in 1266. the town was an important Norse port, and later on gained a history of trading with ports of northern Europe. The Old St Peter's Kirk is said to date from circa 1220. most of the town is a planned 19th century development. The town expanded in the 20th century, when Dounreay experimental nuclear power station was built 7km away. As a result, the population of Thurso mushroomed, from 3000 to 9000 inhabitants.
