It is the largest natural body of water in Wales and is a favourite for watersports enthusiasts. The £lake of the five parishes' Llyn Tegid is over four miles long and a mile wide at its widest. It plays host to Gwyniad, a unique fish thought to be related to the herring and a possible ice age relic. The lake's name comes from £Tegid Foel' a character in the 'Mabinogi'? '“ a series of Welsh stories and legends from around the 6th Century in the legendary King Arthur's time. The Tower of Bala is a moat mill which was formerly thought to mark the site of a Roman camp. In the 18th century, Bala was well-known for the manufacture of flannel, stockings, gloves and hosiery. It was a town of knitters, which has now been overtaken more by modern industry and tourism. In both 1996 and 1997 Bala hosted the National Eisteddfod, a Welsh festival and music, song, and literature with heavy druidic tones.
