About Oldham - show infohide info
Oldham is a large town in the north west of England, in the conurbation of Greater Manchester and the traditional county of Lancashire. The town has a population of 103,554. Oldham has been inhabited since the 11th century, however it was during the Industrial Revolution that the towns prosperity and growth occured, particularly through the cotton industry. This was thanks to its communication links with Manchester, and the damp climate which lent itself to breakage free pulling and spinning of cotton. At its peak, over 350 mills were active in the town, which was responsible for over 10% of the worlds cotton spinning. The last mill closed in the 1990's; many of the former mills are dotted around the landscape of Oldham, the majority now converted into industrial units. The town was blighted by large-scale rioting in 2001, when various Asian communities clashed in the Glodwick due to underlying racial tensions. The town today is culturally diverse, with a large Asian community. There is a vibrant nightlife scene, with several nightclubs based on Yorkshire Street. However, Yorkshire Street is renowned for violence and fights, with a heavy police presence. Also in the town is an art gallery and a theatre, The Colliseum. Oldham used to have 5 railway stations, however now has two - Oldham Mumps and Oldham Werneth. Oldham Mumps sees services between Manchester Victoria and Shaw & Crompton, and Rochdale. Services to Shaw & Crompton also call at Oldham Werneth. All services are operated by Northern Rail. Plans have been suggested to replace the rail network with a light rail system connected to the Manchester Metrolink, though these plans are on hold as the government refuse to meet the costs of the extension and re-engineering. Nearby towns to Oldham include Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Salford, Ashton-under-Lyne, Stalybridge, Middleton, Prestwich and Heywood.
