About Scunthorpe - show infohide info

Scunthorpe is a town in the county of Lincolnshire, known as the 'Industrial Garden Town'. It has a population of 62,000. The town has long been involved in industrial processes, as Ironstone was mined there as early as the Roman Occupation, though the deposits were forgotten until the 19th century, when the rediscovery led to the development of the steel and iron industries in the town, and a rapid population growth as a result. Despite decline in the 1980's, the steel industry is still a major industry in the town; though other industries have taken root in the town, including electronics, plastics, food and clothing. The town is known for its football team, nicknamed 'The Iron', and also for being blocked by various internet filters as a result of a 4 character string in its name. Scunthorpe sees regular rail services between Cleethorpes and Manchester Airport, as well as services to Lincoln. The town is linked by motorway (M180 and the M181 spur to the town). Humberside airport is 12 miles away, and sees various UK domestic services and a few international destinations served. Nearby towns to Scunthorpe include Doncaster, Grimsby, Kingston-upon-Hull, Goole, Gainsborough and Retford.
