About Ramsgate - show infohide info
Ramsgate is a seaside resort in the county of Kent, on the island of Thanet. Ramsgate has an estimated population of approximately 40,000 people. The grew around Ramsgate Harbour, on which construction started in 1749, though the harbour wasn't officially completed until 1850. Ramsgate harbour has the distinction of being the only Royal titled harbour in the UK, a title awarded in 1821 after a visit by King George IV and the Royal Yacht Squadron. Today, the site is one of largest marinas on the south coast, and sees regular ferry services to Ostend in Belgium. The town has a proud history of sea rescues, performed by the lifeboats, often in conjunction with the harbour tugboats, due to the number of ships grounding themselves on the treacherous Goodwin Sands. During WWII, Ramsgate was a major embarkation point for the Dunkirk evacuation, with over 4,200 ships leaving Ramsgate Harbour. 42,783 soliders were moved on 82 special trains, second only to the port of Dover in terms of movements. Ramsgate is served by various modes of transport, with rail links to London Victoria (via Chatham) and Charing Cross (via Dover and Folkestone, or via Canterbury). Nearby Manston (Kent International) Airport, which is currently devoid of scheduled flights since the demise of EUJet. Nearby towns to Ramsgate include Margate, Herne Bay, Whitstable, Deal, Sandwich, Broadstairs and Canterbury.
