About Tamworth - show infohide info
Tamworth is a town of 74,581 inhabitants, in the county of Staffordshire. The town gets its name from the river Tame, which flows through the town. Tamworth has existed since Saxon times. A castle to defend the town against the Danes by Ethelfleda, Queen of the Kingdom of Mercia. In the 11th century, a Norman castle was built on the site of the former Saxon one; this castle stile exists today. The town saw major expansion during the Industrial Revolution, with a number of coal mines in the vicinity. As a result, a number of miners lived in the town. Tamworth also became a hub for the canal network, allowing the movement of the mined coal to other areas of the UK. The Coventry Canal and the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal were built through the town. Later, rail arrived at Tamworth, with the Midland Railway route from Derby to Birmingham, and later the London and North Western Railway, which provided direct trains to the capital. Recently, Tamworth has expanded as a result of overspill from the West Midlands. The village of Fazely has become merged with Tamworth, and is now considered by many to be a part of Tamworth. If this is considered to be the case, the population of Tamworth is over 80,000 inhabitants. Tamworth is still served by rail. The station is on two levels, one level providing services on the West Coast Main Line to London and Scotland, the other providing service on the Derby - Birmingham route, and sees trains to Nottingham, Bristol, Cardiff and Hereford. Nearby towns to Tamworth include Stafford, Nuneaton, Lichfield, Walsall, Sutton Coldfield, Atherstone, West Bromwich and Birmingham.
