About Hugh Town - show infohide info
Hugh Town is the capital town of the Isles of Scilly, an archipelago of Islands off the Cornish coast. The population of Hugh Town is just 1,068; the population of the Isles of Scilly have a total population of 2,200, thus Hugh Town is home to almost half of the population of the Isles of Scilly. Hugh Town is situated on the island of St Mary's. The Isles of Scilly have been inhabited since the Stone Age, and throughout history, the main sources of subsistence have been agriculture and fishing. These remain important today, however the Isles of Scilly's main industry is now tourism. It is thought the islands were once much larger, and were possibly once one large island; even now it is possible to walk between some islands at low tide. The Isles of Scilly were a Royalist stronghold during the English Civil War. This caused the start of the Three Hundred and Thirty Five year war, between the Isles of Scilly and the Netherlands, as the Royalists based ships in the archipelago and inflicted heavy damage on the Dutch navy, which was fighting on the side of the Royalists. On 30 March 1651, Admiral Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp arrived in Scilly to demand reparation for the losses inflicted. When he recieved a negative response, he declared war on the Isles of Scilly which were one of the few parts of the UK not in Parliamentarian hands. However, when the Royalist fleet surrendered in June 1651, the Dutch fleet left without having fired a shot, however the Dutch subsequently forgot to declare peace. Thus the war has become the longest war, and the war with fewest casualties as no shots were ever fired, thus it has been argued that it was never actually a war. Despite this, peach was finally declared on April 17th, 1986 Due to the geographical location of the Isles, Hugh Town experiences a vast range of climates. Because of the surrounding sea, Hugh Town sees very little frost and snow in winter, though often bears the brunt of high winds coming from the Atlantic Ocean. As a result of the climate, flower growers in the Isles of Scilly can have be grown well ahead of those in Britain, indeed, flowers are the main export of the Isles of Scilly, particularly daffodils. Hugh Town can be accessed by plane from Land's End, Newquay, Exeter, Bristol and Southampton. Flights are operated by the Isles of Scilly Skybus. Some destinations are seasonal. Helicopters operate from Penzance, and additionally operate between St Mary's and Tresco. There is also a regular ferry service from Penzance.
