About Skelmersdale - show infohide info
Skelmersdale is the largest town in the district of West Lancashire. It's population is approximately 41,700 inhabitants. The town can be traced back to the Domesday book, with a reference to Skjalmar's Dale. The town was originally a mining town, and later, like much of Lancashire, became a mill town, heavily involved in the fabrics industry. Again, like much of Lancashire, with the decline of mining and fabrics, Skelmersdale became a poor town. In the 1960's, the government declared Skelmersdale a new town in order to alleviate the popualtion problems in Liverpool and surrounding areas, as a result many of Skelmersdale's homes are council estates. Despite the relatively low economic status, the town has one of the UK's lowest crime rates, a far cry from the 1970's and 1980's, when many industries shut down in the town, causing high instances of poverty, crime and drug abuse. Today, the town retains some major employers, including the Co-operative Bank, Skelmersdale's single largest employer, as well as Constance Carroll (cosmetics), Quentin's (potato snacks; to be replaced by Walkers in 2006), and Matalan (clothes retailers), who have their headquarters and main distribution centre in the town. Skelmersdale is no longer served by rail, though the station of Upholland is two miles away, and sees trains between Rochdale and Kirkby, which travel via Manchester Victoria. The town is also close to the M58 motorway, which links to the M6. Nearby towns to Skelmersdale include Ormskirk, Liverpool, Bootle, Huyton, St. Helens, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Maghull, Orrell, Chorley and Bolton.
