About Orlando - show infohide info
Orlando is a city of 185,951, with a total of 1,644,561 in its metropolitan area. It is 6th largest city in the US State of Florida. The city is best known for the tourist attractions in the area, particularly the nearby Walt Disney World Resort, which is in the Reedy Creek Improvement District . Other area attractions include SeaWorld, Universal Orlando Resort and also the World's Largest McDonald's. Despite being far from the main tourist attractions, downtown Orlando has recently seen much redevelopment, with many more projects currently under construction or planned. One of the oldest attractions in this area is Gatorland. Orlando sees an estimated 52 million tourists a year, during its peak seasons. The most critical event for Orlando's economy occurred in 1965 when Walt Disney announced the plans for Walt Disney World. The famous vacation resort opened in October, 1971, ushering in an explosive population and economic growth for the Orlando metropolitan area, which now encompasses Orange, Seminole, Osceola, and Lake counties. As a result, tourism became the centerpiece of the area's economy, and this is the case today. Orlando is served by two commercial airports, the McCoy International airport which is served by most scheduled airlines, and sees over 30 Million passengers a year. Airlines include British Airways, American, Delta, US Airways, JetBlue, Southwest, AirTran, Continental, Virgin Atlantic, Frontier, United, Northwest, Aer Lingus, Icelandair and Air Canada. The alternative airport, Sanford International, which sees low cost and British charter operators, including Thomsonfly, First Choice, MyTravel, FlyGlobespan, Edelweiss and Thomas Cook. Orlando also has an executive airport for small aircraft and executive jets.
