Oxford is a borough of south-central England on the Thames River. Oxford is a city and local government district in Oxfordshire, England. First mentioned in 912, Oxford was chartered in 1605. Oxford is home of the University of Oxford, the oldest University in the English-speaking world. Oxford University with its famed 'dreaming spires,' was founded in the 12th century and still dominates the center of the city. Unlike its great rival, Cambridge, Oxford is an industrial city, particularly associated with car manufacture in the suburb of Cowley.
