About Telford - show infohide info
Telford is a town in the county of Shropshire, with a population of 138,241. It is a planned town, named after Thomas Telford, a Scottish industrialist who became Surveyor of Public Works of Shropshire The town was built during the 1960's and 1970's as a New Town in the former coal mining area of the county. The new town of Telford enveloped a number of existing towns and villages such as Dawley, Stirchley, Donnington Wood and Oakengates, and the scenic Ironbridge Gorge. A shopping centre was built at the geographical centre of the new town. Telford was originally supposed to have a population of 250,000 inhabitants before the year 2000. Despite this, it is still the largest town in Shropshire. A number of companies have based themselves in Telford, in particular the IT companies EDS, Cap Gemini & Fujitsu, who each employ significant numbers of the local population.
