About Thetford - show infohide info
Thetford is a town in the county of Norfolk. The town has a population of 21588 people as of 2001. In recent years it has become home to a substantial Portugese immigrant population. The town has been in existence since Anglo Saxon times when it was home of the Monarch's of East Anglia, and seat of a bishopric. Castle Hill in the town is the highest Norman Motte in the UK, though no trace of the castle which once stood atop the mound exists. Thetford also contains a ruined Cluniac priory dating from the 12th century. Thetford was also birthplace of the famous radical, Thomas Paine. A statue commemorating him stands in the centre of the town, holiding a quill and a book; the book, Paine's 'The Rights of Man' is being held upside down. Today the town is popular with tourists, who come to visit the ruined (and reputedly haunted) priory, and to climb the old Motte which affords excellent views over the town of Thetford. Thetford is served by rail, by two different companies. One, formerly Anglia, run services between Norwich and Cambridge, from where connections to London Liverpool Street can be made; and Central Trains who run services between Norwich and Liverpool via either Liverpool, Manchester or Birmingham. Nearby towns include Mildenhall, Brandon, Wymondham, Bury St Edmunds, Ely, Soham, Cambridge, Newmarket, Stowmarket and Bury St Edmunds.
