About Durham - show infohide info

Durham is a small city with an exceptional castle and cathedral that have been designated a World Heritage Site. The Norman castle, built on a peninsular overlooking the River Wear, was begun in 1072 and positioned adjacent to a Benedictine monastery. St. Cuthbert was buried here. Durham is a compact city yet offers a wide range of facilities. A wide range of shops and restaurants co-exist happily with the Victorian Market. In the 19th century, the University was founded, thanks to the benevolence of Bishop Van Mildert and the Cathedral Chapter. Durham Castle became the first university college, and nearby Auckland Castle was retained as the sole residence of the Bishop.
