Trowbridge is a town in the county of Wiltshire. According to the 2001 census, Trowbridge has a population of 28,141 poeple. Trowbridge lies on the River Biss. The name of the town is thought to come from a root meaning 'Tree Bridge', referring to the first bridge over the River Biss. Trowbridge was originally dominated by the wool trade. The last mill closed in 1982, and is now a museum dedicated to the industry and its history in Trowbridge. The Kennet and Avon Canal runs through the town, and was instrumental in the growth of the wool industry in the town. Trowbridge has a number of architectural interest buildings from its wool related past, as well as the Newtown conservation area, an area of preserved Victorian-era houses.
