About Matlock - show infohide info
Matlock is a town in the county of Derbyshire. It was formerly a spa townon the River Derwent, and prospered from hydropathy and mills which both used the river. At one stage, the town had 20 hydros, on the banks of the Derwent. The largest was built in 1853, and closed in the 1950's; the building is now home of Derbyshire County Council. The town formerly had a cable tram system inspired by San Francisco's system. The system was closed in 1927, as it lost out to bus and car transportation. The tram shed still stands in Hall Leys Park. Also in the park is a miniature railway, bandstand, and the oldest motor boats in the UK. The town is served by trains to Derby on the Hope Valley Line, and the town is also home to a section of preserved rail ('Peak Rail') between Matlock and Rowsley. The town used to have services to Manchester via Buxton, however the line to Buxton was closed during the Beeching era. Towns close to Matlock include Bakewell, Sutton in Ashfield, Kirkby in Ashfield, Chesterfield, Ashbourne, Alfreton and Wirksworth
