Ruthin is the county town of Denbighshire, North Wales. Ruthin has a population of 5,218 people. The town is located around a hill in the Vale of Clwyd; the older parts of the town lie on top of the hill, newer area are not located as high up, and lie on the floodplain of the River Clwyd, causing problems with flooding until new flood control works were brought online in late 2003. Little is known of Ruthin prior to the building of its castle in 1277, and was habitable by 1281. The castle was demolised by order of parliament during the English Civil War. The castle was rebuit in the 19th century as a country house, and is now a luxury hotel. Ruthin was once served by the Rhyl-Corwen Vale of Clwyd Railway, however along with many other lines of similar status, it was closed during the Beeching era. The former station site is now occupied by a roundabout in the town centre as well as a craft centre. Towns close to Ruthin include Denbigh, Mold, Buckley, Chester, Wrexham and Shotton.
