About Windermere - show infohide info

Windemere is a town in the county of Cumbria. It does not actually lie next to the lake of the same name, however thanks to expansion, it has merged with the town of Bowness-on-Windermere. The town has a population of approximately 7500 inhabitants. The town was originally known as Birthwaite, however when the Kendal and Windermere railway arrived in the town, it was renamed to it's current name of Windermere. The railway spurred massive growth in the town, as tourists arrived from all over the UK to visit the lake and enjoy the scenic surroundings. Today, tourists still visit Windermere, as well as Bowness-on-Windermere and Ambleside, for the same reasons as when the railway was newly opened. The lake, and the potential for watersports, as well as the nearby scenery and paths for hiking and fell walking. The lake is England's largest natural lake, and Windermere has been one of Englands most popular tourist destinations for over a century. As 'mere' means lake, referring to Lake Windermere is technically incorrect, though it is frequently done to differentiate the town and lake. Nearby Bowness-on-Windermere sees the 'hub' of Windermere ferries, which operate on lake tours and to destinations along the banks, including Lakeside (for connections to the Lakeside and Haverthwaite preserved railway), Waterhead and Ambleside. The ferries can also be chartered. One of the steamers, 'Tern', dates from 1891 and is still in use today. The total fleet consists of 16; 3 steamers and 13 launches. Today, the railway which brought Windermere its prosperity is much reduced, and is now just a single track branch with a single platform at Windermere. Trains shuttle between Oxenholme and Windermere, and continue onwards to Manchester Airport every two hours, giving connections to the larger towns of Lancaster, Preston and Manchester. The site of the old station is now built upon by a large supermarket, and the headquarters of Lakeland Limited. Nearby towns to Windermere include Bowness-on-Windermere, Ambleside, Kendal, Ulverston, Keswick, Barrow-in-Furness, Sedbergh, Arnside and Grange-over-Sands.
