Carrickfergus is a town in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, and is administrative centre for Carrickfergus Borough Council. The town lies on the north shore of Lough Neagh. The town is home to the Norman-era Carrickfergus castle, dating from 1177, and is one of the best preserved castles in Ireland. The town was formerly important for the textile industry, though today is more important for its sailing. The town is home to Carrickfergus marina, which holds 300 berths. The town is also a dormitory town for Belfast, and is served by rail for the capital. Carrickfergus is a short drve from the M2 motorway for Belfast also. Nearby towns include Belfast, Ballyclare, Newtownabbey, Bangor, Whitehead and Mossley.
