About Dungannon - show infohide info

Dungannon is a town in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It is a town of about 10,000 inhabitants, and is centre of the Dungannon and South Tyrone administrative area. Dungannon is home to one of the oldest schools in Ireland, and was chartered in 1608 by King James I. Traditionally, Dungannon was involved in linen manufacture, like much of Northern Ireland. However, the linen industry has declined, and Dungannon's primary industry is now glass blowing. An interesting feature of the town is the former Police barracks at the top right hand corner of the market square which is quite unlike any other barracks of a similar vintage in Ireland. The unusal design of this building is apparently due to a mix up with the plans in Dublin which meant Dungannon got a station designed for the Khyber Pass in Afghanistan and they got a standard Irish barracks, complete with a traditional Irish fireplace. Dungannon lies at the end of the M1 motorway, linking the town to Belfast. as a result, the town is a dormitory town for the capital, with a number of commuters. Nearby towns include Carland, Cappagh, Moy, Eglish, Coalisland, Maghery and Donaghmore.
