The town is the administrative centre for the county of East Dumbartonshire. Historically, Kirkintilloch owes its wealth to the Forth and Clyde Canal, which enabled it to act as an inland port, serving both east and west coasts of Scotland; even now Kirkintilloch boasts it is the 'canal capital' of Scotland.
