About Rotherham - show infohide info
Rotherham is a town in South Yorkshire, on the east coars of the UK. Rotherham lies on the River Don, in the Don valley between Doncaster and Sheffield. Rotherham was settled in the Early Middle Ages, and was soon extablised as a market town. Later on, the towns natural resources were exploited with the industrial revolution. Iron, and later steel, became Rotherham's main industry, thanks to its proximity to the coalfields of Yorkshire and its own iron ore in the area. Rotherham steel was renowned for its strength; at the peak, the Templeborough steelworks employed over 10,000, was over a mile long, and housed 6 electric arc furnaces, producing 1.8 million tonnes of steel annually. The operation shut down in 1993; the site is now the Magna Science Adventure Centre. As a result of its past industry, Rotherham has been a largely working-class town. A number of well known comedians come from Rotherham, and started their careers on the working mens club circuit; Dougie Brown, Paul Shane, and The Chuckle Brothers to name a few. The town is served by frequent trains to Leeds (for connections to London, Edinburgh and Glasgow), Scunthorpe, Sheffield and Adwick. Nearby towns include Sheffield, Doncaster, Chapeltown, Mexborough, Leeds, Conisbrough, Hoyland and Maltby.
