About Tenby - show infohide info
Tenby is a coastal town in the county of Pembrokeshire in South Wales. The town has a population of 15,122 inhabitants. It is thought that Tenby has been inhabited for over 10,000 years, though Tenby's history really started during the Norman times, when Tenby was established as a garrison town, complete with St Mary's Parish Church. In the 13th century, the walls around the town were built to repel attacks from Welsh natives. The walls were built by William De Valence, Earl of Pembroke. In Medieval times, Tenby became important for European trade. In 1566 Portugese seamen landed oranges in Wales, the first time they had been seen in the country. In the 17th century, civil war and plague ravaged the town, however by the Victorian era, Tenby was revitalised as it became known as a health resort. Today, Tenby is still a resort. The town has 4km of blue flag winning beaches, lying on the UK's only coastal national park. Other attractions include the 13th-century town walls, the Five Arches barbican, the 15th-century St Mary's Church, the Tudor Merchant's House, a museum and an art gallery. Tenby lies on the Swansea-Pembroke railway lines, and sees several trains daily between the two stations. Trains to Carmarthen and Hereford pass through the station, though with only one or two trains daily. Nearby towns to Tenby include Pembroke and Pembroke Dock, Neyland, Saudersfoot, Milford Haven, Haverfordwest, Narberth, St Clears and Carmarthen.
