About St Ives - show infohide info
St Ives is a town in the county of Cornwall. The town has a population of 11165 inhabitants. In 1557, during the prayer book rebellion, a notable atrocity was comitted here when the English Provost Marshall visited the town, and invited the mayor to lunch with him. During the lunch, the mayor was asked to erect the towns gallows, and later was hung from them by the Provost Marshall for the crime of being a Roman Catholic. The modern town came into being during 1887, with the coming of the railways. A branch line was built from St Erth to St Ives, enabling Victorian holidaymakers to visit the town. Many of the current buildings date from te late 19th century when the town underwent its expansion. The railway winds around the cliffs and bays along the coast, and survived the Beeching era to become a tourist attraction in its own right. Trains run half hourly to and from St Erth, on a circular route. At St Erth, connections for services to Penzance, Plymouth and Bristol can be made. Nearby towns to St Ives include Penzance, Camborne, Redruth, St Erth, Helston, Hayle, St Just, Truro and Newquay.
