About Sligo - show infohide info

Sligo is the county town of County Sligo, in the Republic of Ireland. Sligo is not yet a city, though campaigns are in effect to change this. The town has a population of over 18,000 inhabitants. Sligo's Irish name, meaning 'the place of the shells' comes from the fact there were an abundance of shellfish on the banks of the river, and in its estuary. The river was originally known as the Sligeach, though is now known as the Garavogue. Shells were found while excavating the foundations for many of the townhouses which now stand in Sligo. It is said that the picturesque Coney Island in Sligo Bay gives its name to the island of the same name in New York, Which was names by Captain Peter O'Connor, captain of schooner Arethusa, which plied its trade between Sligo and New York over 200 years ago. Sligo is connected to Dublin by rail, served by Iarnród Éireann. En route to Dublin Connolly Station from Sligo McDiarmada, trains call at several intermediate stations including Ballymote, Carrick-on-Shannon, Dromod, Longford, Edgeworthstown and Mullingar. The service has recently increased to 5 services a day in each direction, with new modern stock serving the route. Nearby towns include Ballisodare, Collooney, Drumcliff, Carney, Shanvus, Dromard, Ardabrone and Beltra.
